Long day is long

Wow, today has been a long day.

Cats kept me up last night, so I started out having a two dwarf morning (Sleepy and Grumpy). And I had to get up early because I had a doctor’s appointment. When I was showing off my scratch from last week’s visit to the vet, that prompted my doctor to check when the last time I had a tetanus shot was, and I was due (just in case someone decides to bite me, puncture wounds and all that). So I got a tetanus shot this morning before I’d even had breakfast. And (joy!) she finally remembered that I’m old enough to have that first colonoscopy. So that’s on my To Do list once faire is over (No way I’m going without food for a day or two until faire is over). Let’s just say that I’m not particularly looking forward to the procedure. Mostly because I will need to somehow find someone to give me a ride. Hey [personal profile] fionaniconnor I might need to book you for a ride to the doctor in a couple of weeks.

Work was work. I had lunch with my cube-neighbor Chris. It’s been a bit since we had a good long chat. And I got volunteered to be a scrumbag, er, I mean scrummaster for my team’s pilot agile project. Mostly because I mentioned that I’d done agile before (at like my last six jobs). I just may be the only person on my team with any agile experience. So that’s going to be interesting.

But right now I’m bushed. And I need to get some sleep tonight for our first meeting tomorrow.

Hump Day

brickhousewench: (Default)
I am just SO behind on everything right now. But then again, I’m always treading water during faire season, because I don’t have my weekends free to catch up. It didn’t help when I got sick after the first weekend of faire and basically spent a week and a half just trying to get healthy again.

And then I made a post last Friday to my alumni group on Facebook that ended up generating over 500 comments. O_O So that sucked up a bunch of my time Friday and Monday, getting caught up on all the shenanigans related to that. Which included someone blogging about the thread and misquoting a bunch of people. Leading to a second thread, this one about the people upset about being misquoted and wanting the forum moderator to ban the blogger. And then the forum moderator private messaged me, because the third-party tool that he uses to help manage the community wasn’t working, and did I have “App, Websites, and Plug-ins” disabled on my Facebook account? You bet your bippy I do. And the fact that his tool was failing to see a public post because I said I didn’t want to share non-public data about myself? Proves that having that setting set to NOPE was the right choice. Why would his app/tool need to access any non-public information about me to gather stats on a public post?

At any rate, the time spent on that was time I probably should have been spending on other things. Like sleeping or loving on my kitties or working on projects for faire.

Or getting caught up on my reading. I can’t remember the last time I had time to read Live Journal. And I’m at least a week behind on Dreamwidth. I haven’t been reading the New York Times (but that’s partly by choice, I’m a bit exhausted by the relentless news cycle of hurricanes, earthquakes, 45, and other disasters). Or caught up on my writing. So much going on, that I haven’t had time to write about.

At least I had the energy to do some housework when I got home tonight. I vacuumed, ran a load of laundry, and washed some dishes. Yay for small progress.

***

I have a new cube neighbor at work, a woman perhaps about my age. Her name is Meg, and she’s a Product Manager, also working in middleware. Not sure if we’ll be working together or not, it’s only her first day in the office, she’s still getting set up after New Hire Orientation. But since my project seems to want to integrate with everything, chances are we might end up working together eventually. At least it’s going to be a bit less lonely around here (so many empty cubes near me!).

***

Still on baby watch.

I can't wait until Monday (I took another day off for faire recovery).

The Orville

Sep. 20th, 2017 10:40 pm[personal profile] brickhousewench
brickhousewench: (TV)
I came home last night and ended up watching some TV on the DVR. I watched the first two episodes of The Orville, Seth MacFarlane’s new science fiction show. It’s clearly supposed to be a riff on Star Trek, because what clean shiny space show isn’t? I thought, from the trailers, that it might end up being a comedy in the vein of Galaxy Quest (but probably raunchier, we are talking Seth MacFarlane here). It’s not nearly as funny as I thought it would be. But they’re certainly not playing it quite straight enough for a drama. But it’s not quite so straight that it's camp either. It’s weird, after two episodes, I still can’t decide what to make of it (or if I like the show or not).

Maybe spoilers? Not really…. )

I don’t know if I’ll keep watching this one or not. I’m not in love with it. But I don’t hate it yet either. I’ll give it a couple more episodes and see if it gets any better.

Poor Cassie

I went in to make the bed this morning and didn't realize that Cassie had burrowed down into the pile of blankets (she usually sleeps on the folded up fleece blanket I have off to the side for the kitties to enjoy). I yanked on the covers and the poor thing came tumbling out. I felt so bad, she was clearly asleep and hadn't heard me come in. =(

But she got lots of lovins before I left for the office. Everyone did.

I got Supernatural Season 12 and Hawaii Five-0 Season 7 in the mail yesterday, so naturally I'm in a good mood.

I've also starting watching Arrow and Gotham and like both a lot. I really like the visual style of Gotham, how it's timeless and yet has aspects of the 30s and 40s, the clothes and the big cars especially.

I also watched all of Bojack Horseman. I needed to get used to the style and universe first, but wow, I love it so much. It's really depressing, but funny and it has these "OMG, this is horrible and disturbing and it's breaking my heart." moments that really work. (Bojack's mom, OMG!!)

Brownies anyone?

Sep. 20th, 2017 09:25 am[personal profile] brickhousewench
brickhousewench: (kitteh hungry)
Yesterday someone brought in brownies to share in the kitchen at work. They were cut into tiny squares, so I took two, But after I ate the first one I decided (like I often do) that I wanted a glass of milk with my brownie. So I wrapped the second tiny chocolate chunk up in a tissue to take home and have after dinner. Where I put it on the counter and promptly forgot about it.

Until about 3:00 am, when I was woken up by the distinctive clinking of dishes and glassware. Which meant that some naughty kitty was on the kitchen counter (and that I really needed to get around to emptying and filling the dishwasher). I jumped out of bed to go yell at whoever it was. Let me tell you, discovering a brown blob on the carpeting in the middle of the night when you’re not wearing your glasses is not a fun experience.

Brutus had dragged the brownie out of the kitchen and all the way into the hallway. It definitely had teeth marks in it, so it went into the trash. *mourns loss of my brownie*

I’m more convinced than ever that the previous owner 1) probably fed these kitties people food (evidenced by all three of them swarming me the first time I bought home McDonald’s french fries) and 2) probably let the kitties go hungry more than once (evidenced by how they eat normally if I keep the food bowl full, but bolt their food if I let it go empty. And how all three of them prowl the kitchen counters looking for food scraps).

Listening to the West Wing Weekly podcast, I'm up to 2x3 The Midterm Elections and one of my least favorite scenes in the West Wing, when President Bartlet 'dismantles' Dr. Jane Jacobs's homophobia.

BARTLET
Good. I like your show. I like how you call homosexuality an abomination.

JENNA JACOBS
I don't say homosexuality is an abomination, Mr. President. The Bible does.

BARTLET
Yes, it does. Leviticus.

JENNA JACOBS
18:22

BARTLET
Chapter and verse. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here.
I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.
(small chuckles from the guests) She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, and
always clears the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While
thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff, Leo McGarry, insists on working
on the Sabbath, Exodus 35:2, clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated
to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important,
'cause we've got a lot of sports fans in this town. Touching the skin of a dead pig makes
us unclean, Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins
still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be
together to stone my brother, John, for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn
my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?

I know I've complained about similar rhetoric before. The argument is this: There are things in the Bible that a modern religious person doesn't observe. This abrogation means that any parts they do still observe are inherently hypocritical, because if they claimed to follow the Bible they would follow the whole Bible.

This is a really stupid argument. Christianity explicitly rejects some of the Hebrew Bible's obligations. It's not hypocritical for them to not observe these things, it's inherently doctrinal, and it could even be argued (as I've sometimes been forced to, because sometimes Christians do weird and offensive things with Jewish ritual) that it's hypocritical if they DO observe those things. The Christian Bible says that Christians do not need to keep kosher. It's right there in the text!

And even things Christians do still observe that are mentioned in the rant are not necessarily observed in the Biblical way, on purpose! Jesus doesn't condemn the idea of the Sabbath, and Christians do observe a Sabbath, but Jesus condemns the idea of putting people to death for breaching the Sabbath. So Christians have a much more relaxed approach to the Sabbath than Jews do. Again, this does not make them hypocrites. It means they ARE observing their religion.

This infuriates me particularly even though I usually don't care all that much if Christians are revealed as hypocrites, because this argument is the classic anti-Judeo-Christian argument: Ostensibly directed at Christians by people who don't bother to distinguish between Jews and Christians. Jews have our own approaches to difficult passages in Tanakh, but generally we don't believe that the ritual law has been abrogated. We think we still are obligated in most if not all of the things Bartlet mentions as absurd rituals. Orthodox Jewish farmers in Israel, to this day, don't plant two crops side by side in a field. And though we don't have the executive ability to carry them out, most of the stoning laws Bartlet mentions are still technically on the books.

And Orthodox Jews generally still believe we are obligated in the prohibition of et zachar lo tishkav, no matter how difficult that may be to reconcile with modern ideas about love and sex. But it's not like the fact that I don't eat shellfish is what allows me to hate gays without hypocrisy! That's the frustrating part of this argument for me. If you accept it, you seem to be accepting the idea that IF Christians hadn't abrogated parts of the Torah's ritual law, they'd be free to consider homosexuality an abomination. But the people who are making this argument clearly don't believe that. They believe that considering homosexuality abominable is evil and homophobic regardless of whether you eat shellfish. So people making Bartlet's argument are making an argument they don't actually believe to try to trap religious people with sophistry.

So when you're criticizing Christian homophobia, or Jewish homophobia, try to do it with an argument that you actually believe, and which actually engages with Christian or Jewish doctrine rather than with your imagined fake version of that doctrine. Ask a Jew how they reconcile Veahavta lereacha kamocha with the idea of telling your neighbor they can't marry the person they love. Ask a Christian how they can send their churchmates to abusive conversion therapies when Jesus preached kindness and humility and not judging the sins of others.

But don't ask them these things because they're traps you're seeking to catch them in. Ask them because religious people have thought about these questions and we have answers to them, answers our critics often refuse to listen to, and because the conversations about these questions are worth having and worth struggling with. These are hard questions that challenge our faith, and serious theists ask them. Serious atheists ought to, also.

And what frustrates me most about this scene, why it's one of my least favorite West Wing moments, is that President Bartlet, deeply Catholic, who once considered the priesthood, must have some answer to these questions that isn't dependent on taking Catholics to task for eating shellfish. This scene is profoundly out of character on a theological level for the man delivering it. And I don't like when President Bartlet lets me down.

Edit: Thanks for comments- I will not be able to respond until after Rosh Hashanah at earliest

Calls To Kill TrumpCare

If you live in a Democratic state you can help.

.....if you live in a state with two Democratic Senators who support the ACA, you may be asking yourself: what more can I do? How can I influence persuadable Republicans in red states who may be on the fence?

Well, we have an answer! We’re bringing back the blue state/red state calling tool from the last healthcare fight.

https://www.trumpcareten.org/calls-to-kill-trumpcare

Here’s how it works:

  1. Sign up below to make phone calls from our peer-to-peer dialing tool. You’ll get an email confirmation with a login, password, and URL to sign into our system. Once signed in, you can start making calls immediately—and we’ll give you a script to make it as easy as possible!

  2. Next, you’ll call a voter in a key state with a swing Republican Senator. These folks are your friends—they attended the Women’s March, they’re standing up to #DefendDACA, and/or fight for progressive causes.

  3. You explain how they have power now. You’ll remind them why the continued fight against TrumpCare is so important—and why they have particular power in this moment.

  4. You ask them to use their power. You’ll ask them to call their senator in opposition to the bill, and to share their own reasons for opposing it.

  5. The tool connects them to their Senator’s office. The call tool will allow you to automatically patch them through to the Senators’ district offices.

It’s super easy: more than 1,000 Indivisibles in blue states made 100,000 phone calls to constituents in our target states in the final two days before the healthcare vote in July. And we won. We can win this time, too.

“Friend posted this one. I haven’t heard anything more recent or accurate. So, default mode: CALL!

They are just one vote shy of repealing the ACA. If any of these Senators represent you, call them NOW. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment.

if you have family or friends in these states, ask them to call. Or use Resist Bot to fax their Senators.  Text RESIST to 50409

Okay, this one sounds fun. Favorite characters in 10 different fandoms.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist. Roy. I mean, Ed is huge fun to write, and so is Al when he gets his snark on, but Roy is my most reliable fic-fodder character, plotting creature that he is.

2. Prince of Tennis. Probably Yukimura, with Rikkai as a whole coming close second. They’re just so much fun to write about as a team; tasty dynamics everywhere, especially with the angst-lever to crack it all open.

3. Bleach. Hm. This one is actually a little difficult. I mean, in absolute terms, Rukia, but, again, mostly Rukia in relation to Ichigo and Orihime and Renji. Close second place is split by Byakyua and Hirako Shinji, despite the second’s late appearance.

4. Kuroko no Basuke. Kuroko, hands down, often in relation to Kagami, but also in relation to the other Miracle-idiots. No one can lay the straight-faced smackdown like Kuroko.

5. Angel Sanctuary. Mad Hatter, with Kira following close behind. I have a soft spot for complex motivation, in case that wasn’t obvious.

6. Naruto. Kakashi, closely followed by Sakura, albeit usually in the key of “omfg, move over and let me drive” given that canon gives them both a pretty raw deal, character-development-wise.

7. 07-Ghost. Frau. I also have a /huge/ soft spot for Teito and Ouka, and everything they might make of their world, but Frau is the most fun to play with.

8. Katekyou Hitman Reborn. Gokudera is entertainingly highstrung, but the more I dug into it, the more Squalo showed up with a bagful of plot and emotional porn.

9. GetBackers. Kazuki, especially in relation to Saizou, Toshiki, Sakura, and Juubei. Also with the emotional porn and fix-it urges.

10. Nirvana in Fire. Lin Shu/Mei Changsu, yes, all the way. A type, I can haz it, and it’s called Magnificent Bastards.

In conclusion, I clearly like the ones who smile politely all the while they’re getting a nice, iron grip on everything around them. Though also the ones whose central motivation is devotion.
